DailyMail A former first-year high school teacher from Baltimore has been sentenced to prison after she admitted to having sex with her 16-year-old male student and videotaping at least one of the encounters. Ekatherine Pappas, 25, in June pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor counts of sexual offense against a student. As part of a plea deal, prosecutors agreed to drop additional felony counts of sexual abuse of a minor. On Monday, the former Spanish teacher at Franklin High School was handed a sentence of three years in prison, but a judge suspended all but one year and one day of her term. Upon her release, Pappas will spend five years on specialized and enhanced supervised probation and will be required to register as a sex offender for 15 years,according to a report by the Baltimore Sun. Charges against Papas were announced back in January when authorities issued a warrant for her arrest, saying she had fled the US to Colombia. The case against Pappas began unfolding in early January when a video surfaced at the school showing the 25-year-old teacher having sex with the 16-year-old victim. A school resource officer saw a copy of the X-rated video on a student’s phone and notified administrators, reported the station WBAL. On the day officials at Franklin High School became aware of the sex video, Pappas went to Dulles Intentional Airport and boarded a flight to Bogota, Colombia. She returned to the US a few weeks later and was arrested at the airport. According to court documents, the victim told detectives his Spanish teacher asked him to cut class on two separate occasions, on December 21 and 22, and drove him to his house for the purpose of having sex with her. One of their sex sessions was recorded on video. Pappas, a graduate of Loyola University, had been teaching at Franklin High for just a month when she became involved with the 16-year-old boy, according to prosecutors.
Obviously making wise decisions was not Maryland Spanish teacher Ekatherine Pappas’ strength, and while having sex with a sixteen-year-old student was obviously a horrible life decision for Ekatherine Pappas, arguably a worse decision was letting the student film the sexual encounter. What did Ekatherine Pappas think was going to happen to the video? The student was going to keep it for his own personal use? Of course not, the student immediately bragged about having sex with his teacher, and showed the video to everyone in school. I think this alone proves that there is no victim in this case, the student was obviously proud that he got to have sex with his teacher, he would not have shown off the video if he was not damaged by the experience. Two other interesting points about this story, first, Ekatherine Pappas had only been working at the school for a month before she got busted screwing one of her students so she works fast. Clearly, having sex with a student was not a moral dilemma for Ekatherine Pappas, she did not agonize over the decision for months. Secondly, when the video predictably started to circulate Ekatherine Pappas fled to Columbia, so she knew that she was busted. I guess when you are caught on video, the evidence is clear, there is no denying the sex at that point so Ekatherine Pappas decided her best option was to run.
