ESPN The New England Patriots acquired wide receiver Brandin Cooks from the New Orleans Saints on Friday for a first- and third-round pick in the upcoming draft, multiple sources told ESPN’s Dianna Russini. The Patriots also will receive the Saints’ fourth-round pick (No. 118 overall). New England’s draft selections headed to the Saints are 32nd and 103rd overall.
In my opinion this trade makes sense for both teams, the New Orleans Saints would like to make one more Super Bowl run with Drew Brees under center, but need to fix their offensive line and defense to do it. Brandon Cooks is a great offensive weapon, but there were several games last year where the Saints put up huge offensive numbers, despite Cooks being a non-factor. The Saints need a lot of help, and they had one major asset, which they converted into multiple draft picks. The Patriots needed a number one receiver and vertical threat in the passing game, and they now have their most explosive offensive player in recent memory, it is scary to think what having an offensive weapon like Brandin Cooks who can take the top off a defense or take a short pass the distance can do for Tom Brady. As if things were not already easy enough for Brady, they just got easier.
