DailyMail A Canada man was killed by a polar bear while he was trying to protect his children. Aaron Gibbons, 31, was visiting Sentry Island with his family when he spotted the bear near Hudson Bay charging towards one of his kids. Frantically he sent them running back to their boat and put himself in between them and the animal. The bear mauled Gibbons Tuesday evening around 7:30 and it was shot dead afterwards by another individual who ran onto the scene to help. By the time Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrived on the scene at the popular fishing and hunting island, Gibbons was dead. Gibbons hailed from Arviat, Nunavut, an Inuit town of just 2,500 people and was a devoted father and a good hunter, according the locals. The Island he was on when he was attacked is six miles away from his home hamlet. ‘He was enjoying his day with his children. They were surprised by a bear that had started to stalk or charge toward one of his children,’ Gordy Kidlapik, Gibbons’s uncle said to Huffington Post. ‘What (Aaron) did was he told his children to run away to the boat while he was putting himself between the bear and his children to protect them,’ he added. He added the girls, described as elementary school aged, made it to the boat them called for help. They were unharmed in the attack. ‘We actually heard the call for help. It was terrible to listen to,’ Kidlapik said. The uncle added that Gibbons would normally have a rifle with him on that island, known to have bears, but he did not have it immediately at hand when the bear attacked. ‘Definitely Aaron died a hero, he protected his children. It’s [the] right word to say right now,’ his cousin Eric Anoee said to CBC. ‘We are still in shock but we are resilient and we will go on and continue as a community,’ he added. Police are now investigating the incident working with the Nunavut coroner’s office. Arviat was home to 840 polar bears in 2016.
I can die in peace knowing that I never visited polar bear habitat, you can bet that you will never find me in an area where polar bears exist, because I do not ever want to be on the menu. Unlike black bears and grizzly bears which are omnivores, polar bears are strictly carnivores, and if you are attacked by a polar bear they are always predatory attacks and they just start eating you alive. A man named Aaron Gibbons was vacationing with his family on Sentry Island in the Hudson Bay, when he and his children were charged by a polar bear, while Gibbons got his daughters to their boat he was killed when he put himself between the polar bear and his family. He died a hero, according to reports, attempting to fend off the bear so it would not attack his children. While attempting to defend his family from he bear, Gibbons was mauled to death, but his family was unharmed as he distracted the bear from attacking the rest of his family.
