Green Bay Packers star Clay Matthews was pitching in a charity softball game over the weekend, when he was nailed in the face with a comebacker off the bat of his Packers teammate Lucas Patrick, it was immediately clear that the line drive had broken Clay Matthews nose. Matthews covered his face with his glove and rushed off the field, he was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he underwent emergency reconstructive nose surgery. Ouch. Hopefully Matthews has no lasting damage from this broken nose, I have known multiple people who have to had more than one surgery to fix a broken nose, because following the initial surgery they had continuing breathing issues that needed further correction. Charity softball can be dangerous, I was once playing in a softball game in which the exact same situation happened, except the pitcher suffered a shattered orbital in the accident. Keep your head on a swivel while playing softball, but if someone hits a line drive back at the pitcher, it happens so fast that there is nothing the pitcher can do even if they have professional athlete reaction time like Clay Matthews.
