This video comes to us from Marakele Predator Park in South Africa, where the 67-year-old British man named Mike Hodge who owns the park was attacked by a large male lion, and dragged away like a rag dol. Hodge, who established the park with his wife Chrissy in 2010, was checking on a smell coming from the cage when the incident occurred. Hodge begins walking towards a large male lion, when suddenly he turns and runs towards the door of the pen, as the lion charges and is quickly on top of him. Visitors at the park scream and a woman is heard yelling “get the rifle” as the lion drags a limp Hodge away, but then a shot rings out, and the lion drops its prey and runs for cover. Hodge is hospitalized, but is expected to make a full recovery, and the lion is believed to have been put down by the warden to save Hodge’s life. My question would be, is Hodge insane? Why did he enter a cage with lions in it? If you are going to enter an enclosure that contains a dangerous animal, the protocol should be to contain the animal in a side-by-side separate enclosure first, then do whatever you need to do inside the enclosure safely with the animal removed and contained. Also, if Mike Hodge is experienced with lions, why did he turn his back and run? If you turn your back and run from a predator, it’s going to trigger a predatory response, and it’s going to attack. Back away slowly. Everyone knows that.
