ESPNThe Cleveland Browns are trading defensive tackle Danny Shelton to the New England Patriots, league sources told ESPN’s Field Yates. The Patriots are also acquiring the Browns’ 2018 fifth-round pick and will send their 2019 third-round pick to Cleveland, sources told ESPN.
The New England Patriots needed to fix their defense, which was soft up the middle in 2017, and acquired a big (6’2 335-pounds) piece from the Cleveland Browns in nose tackle Danny Shelton. The massive Shelton is extremely talented, he was the 12th overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft, and is is still just 24-years-old. The Patriots have struggled to find a dominant nose tackle to be the centerpiece of their 3-4 defense since Vince Wilfork left as a free agent after the 2014 season, and as the Browns have been running a 4-3 defense under new coordinator Gregg Williams, a massive most tackle like Shelton became expendable. The Patriots gave up a 2019 3rd round pick to acquire Shelton, but they also get a 2018 fifth round pick from the Browns, so they essentially traded down two rounds to potentially add their nose tackle of the future.
