NBA Trade Deadline day 2018 is here, and the first deal of the day is a major one, we hope you are sitting down. Just kidding, obviously, but it’s a deal that makes sense for both teams. The Detroit Pistons, who have a glut of big men and are point guard needy, have traded center Willie Reed to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for point guard Jameer Nelson. The Bulls, of course, have a glut of guards but needed size on the interior. Both Willie Reed and Jameer Nelson were previously traded last week, with Nelson going from the Pelicans to the Bulls in the Nikola Mirotic trade, and Reed going from the Clippers to the Pistons in the Blake Griffin trade. As both of these players were throw ins in those respective trades, and were caught in a logjam at their respective positions, the Bulls and Pistons balanced their rosters by swapping a point guard for a center. Swapping a surplus at one position for a need at another position makes sense for both teams.
I hope neither of these guys unpacked over the last week, or leased an apartment, because they are on the move again.
Jameer Nelson could actually fill a big role for the Pistons, as they look to make a playoff push with Reggie Jackson sidelined, they were desperate for point guard depth behind Ish Smith.
Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy is reunited with Jameer Nelson, who was his starting point guard for the 2009 Orlando Magic, when they won the Eastern Conference before losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals.
