Shocking breaking NFL news, as the Kansas City Chiefs have decided to move on from Alex Smith and turn the car keys over to Patrick Mahomes, and will trade their veteran signal caller Smith to the Washington Redskins tomorrow. The trade will mean that incumbent Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and he will be able to pick from a large number of quarterback needy suitors, likely including the Denver Broncos, Buffalo Bills and New York Jets. While trading for Alex Smith is going to be cheaper for the Redskins than using the franchise tag on an unhappy Kirk Cousins again, it seems like a lateral move at best from a talent standpoint, and Redskins will need to find a quarterback of the future as Smith is 33-years-old. I have been told that the New York Jets believe they have the talent to win now, and are committed to do whatever it takes to acquire a veteran quarterback this offseason, so expect them to aggressively pursue Kirk Cousins. However there will be competition, the Buffalo Bills crave a pocket passer like Cousins, and the Denver Broncos are also in the market for a veteran quarterback. Expect dark horses to emerge for Cousins too. The first dominos of what is going to be a very interesting NFL offseason have begun to fall, stay tuned.
Its unclear what the Redskins are doing, they refused to give 29-year-old Kirk Cousins a long term contract making him unhappy, but give 33-year-old Alex Smith $23.5 million per year and $70 million guaranteed. I do not think I’m alone when I say, not only is Cousins younger and more deserving of a long term deal, I consider him a better player right now than Alex Smith. Bizarre.
