ESPNThe New England Patriots are close to an agreement on a two-year contract with free-agent wide receiver Kenny Britt, a league source tells ESPN. Britt’s agent wouldn’t confirm the deal, but Britt — who was waived by the Cleveland Browns on Friday and went unclaimed — visited New England on Tuesday. The 29-year-old Britt, who played at Rutgers under Greg Schiano — a close friend of Patriots coach Bill Belichick — had 18 catches for 223 yards and two touchdowns in nine games for the Browns this year.
if I was another contender in the AFC, Kenny Britt signing with the Patriots would terrify me, Kenny Britt has always been an extremely gifted player physically who gives Tom Brady a big target on the outside in the red zone which he does not currently have on the roster. Could I see Kenny Britt starting for the Patriots, catching a touchdown in the AFC Championship Game and two touchdowns in the Super Bowl, becoming an instant folk hero in New England. However, I could also see Kenny Britt’s off field concerns popping up again over the offseason, and the Patriots releasing him in 2018 when he shows up to training camp out of shape. That’s always been the problem with Kenny Britt, he should have been a great player, but his lack of commitment and concerns about his behavior off the field have damaged his career. Maybe Kenny Britt buys in to the Patriots philosophy, maybe he revitalizes his career in New England as a much needed big target for Tom Brady, but based on his history Patriots nation cannot expect too much out of Kenny Britt.
