CarinsPost A tourist has been bitten by a small crocodile at Cape Tribulation while walking along a creek. The 24-year-old woman, believed to be from the UK, was bitten on her upper left leg by a 1.5m saltwater crocodile at Cape Tribulation beach about 6pm yesterday. A Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service spokeswoman confirmed the woman was transported to Mossman Hospital for treatment of the bite mark, and discharged this morning. Shocking footage has emerged on social media of the incident, showing the croc suddenly launched itself out of the shallow creek while the victim and a friend were filming a mudskipper. It is the second time a tourist has been attacked by a crocodile at Cape Tribulation since May last year. Northern NSW photographer Cindy Waldron was fatally attacked by a 4.3m croc at Thornton Beach.
This video is going viral, and it comes to us from Cape Tribulation in Queensland, Australia, it shows a 24-year-old British tourist get attacked by a small crocodile while attempting to film a mudskipper on the surface of a creek. The water is murky and there is no sign of any danger whatsoever, when the crocodile attacks out of seemingly nowhere, and grazes the tourist’s leg with its teeth before coming into full view. Crocodiles are ambush predators, and these tourists had no idea that just under the surface of the murky creek water, an apex predator was laying in wait to strike at any prey that wandered near the water’s edge. It also shows you how easy it would be for a person to assume that a body of water is relatively safe, but they are mistaken, there is a prehistoric killing machine right under their nose. If this crocodile got a better grip on the tourist’s leg, or if it was a much larger crocodile, this could be a much sadder story. However, in this case the tourist escapes with superficial puncture wounds, and authorities are working to trap the crocodile. If you are in Australia, and you think that a body of water seems safe, we advise you to stay away from the edge.
NOTE: I guess Australian politician Bob Katter was right last week, when he angrily yelled that Australians had much bigger problems than same sex marriage, like killer crocodiles.
