NFL.comIn a surprise decision Wednesday, the Buffalo Bills benched Tyrod Taylor in favor of a rookie quarterback. Bills coach Sean McDermott told reporters that Nathan Peterman will start against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. “This is about becoming a better team. Tyrod has made improvements,” McDermott explained to reporters. “This is not an indictment on Tyrod. He is an important part of our team and will continue to be an important part of our team. “I’ve been impressed with Nate and his maturity at a very early point in his career. He has certainly worked hard. … The other day, we [saw] some good things, albeit it was a small sample size in a regular season. That said, he has a lot of work to do, just like we all do.” Taylor has been Buffalo’s starter for two-plus seasons, save for a Week 17 benching last year. The seven-year veteran started the first nine games of this season, completing a career-best 64.2 percent of his passes and throwing 10 touchdowns to three interceptions.
The Buffalo Bills made it clear that Tyrod Taylor was not going to be their quarterback of the future last offseason, the new front office tried trading Taylor and considered declining his option, but instead decided to bring him back on a restructured two year deal. The Bills are (5-4) and are still squarely in the playoff hunt, so it comes as a shock that they have benched Taylor in favor of rookie fifth round draft pick Nate Peterman for Sunday’s game in Los Angeles. The Buffalo Bills new regime is searching for a franchise quarterback, they know their quarterback of the future will not be Tyrod Taylor, so they have to determine if Nate Peterman could be the face of the franchise going forward and he must be showing the Bills something in practice which makes them think he potentially could be that guy. The Bills own two first round picks (their own, Chiefs) and two second round picks (their own, Rams) in the 2018 NFL Draft, this audition for Peterman tells me the new regime is searching for their quarterback of the future, and if it’s not Tyrod Taylor and it’s not Peterman they will use all of their draft picks to be sure they acquire that guy in the 2018 NFL Draft.
As expected Tyrod Taylor was not happy with this decision:
