This video is going viral, and it has scientists perplexed, as it shows a large coconut crab killing and a seabird in a calculated attack. The video was filmed in the Chagos Islands in the Indian Ocean, according to Daily Mail the coconut crab climbed into the bird’s nest whole it was sleeping, then drove its claw into the bird which broke its wing and caused the two creatures to tumble to the sand below. Once they were on the ground, the coconut crab finished the job, and began to eat the unfortunate bird. The killer crab was quickly joined by five other coconut crabs, which tore the bird apart, and all of the crabs joined in the meal. What makes the video so shocking is scientists thought coconut crabs survived mostly on fruits and nuts, occasionally scavenging on carrion or decomposing organic matter, but a coconut crab was never thought to actively hunt live prey. We have discussed coconut crabs in the past here at SportSmasher.com, the world’s largest crab can grow to over 3.3 feet across and weigh over nine pounds, but they are becoming extremely rare and can only be found on a few small islands in the Pacific Ocean after being hunted to extinction by humans in mainland Australia and Madagascar.
