The NFL trade deadline used to be meaningless, but in 2017 there have been plenty of trades, the latest of which is wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin being traded from the Carolina Panthers to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for third and seventh round picks in the 2018 NFL Draft. There is no doubt that the playoff contending Bills needed help at receiver, but it’s a little odd that they acquired one from the Carolina Panthers, who are also a playoff contender that you would not think would jettison a top receiver. The trade gives the Bills a legitimate target in the passing game, and while Kelvin Benjamin’s health and work ethic have been called into question in Carolina, his talent is without question. The Bills offense lacks speed, and while Benjamin cannot the the top off of a defense, he is a huge (6’5 250 pounds) he is a huge target in the passing game who is a threat in the red zone. As for the Panthers, they will try to make the stretch run without a true number one weapon at wide receiver, and while we can argue if Benjamin truly is a number one it’s one less weapon for Cam Newton in the passing game.
