NYDailyNews New Los Angeles Clippers center Willie Reed was jailed Sunday in Miami on a battery charge. His wife told police that he dragged her across the apartment while wrestling for a purse and later pulled her hair and grabbed her by the wrist during an argument Saturday night, according to the police report. Reed’s wife told police the argument started when she told her husband she wanted a divorce. She said she was knocked to the ground while struggling over her purse and dragged around the apartment until the strap broke. She also alleged Reed tore her shirt as she went to the lobby of the apartment building to notify the concierge, then returned to get her two children. When the woman picked up her youngest son and started to exit the apartment again, she told police that Reed grabbed her by the hair to take the child back, then grabbed her left wrist and twisted her arm to get her to the ground. She said she responded by hitting Reed in the head with a glass candle. Reed told police that he never put his hands on his wife, but he did acknowledge grabbing her shirt and her purse, according to the police report. He also told police that he touched his wife as she was getting on the elevator. Police said Reed’s wife had red marks on her left wrist, right biceps, back and chest. Reed spent last season with the Miami Heat and had been working out in Miami in recent days. The 27-year-old center finalized a $1.5 million, one-year contract with the Clippers last week despite his hopes for a longer-term, more lucrative contract in free agency.
Willie Reed spent last season as a backup with the Miami Heat, but when he was forced into action due to injuries, Willie Reed played exceptionally well. Willie Reed earned himself a one year contract worth $1.5 million with the Los Angeles Clippers this offseason, but disaster struck in his personal life, when Willie Reed’s wife informed him that she would not be joining him in Los Angeles this season. Reed’s wife asked for a divorce, at which point Reed threw her to the ground and dragged her across the hall of their apartment by the strap of her purse. When Reed’s wife returned to the apartment to take her children back, Reed grabbed her again, and when police responded Reed’s wife had visible red marks on her arms and torso. The NBA takes domestic violence very seriously under the new collective bargaining agreement, and when Willie Reed debuts for the Los Angeles Clippers, expect it to be well after the start of the NBA season once Reed is finished serving a lengthy suspension.
