ESPN The Toronto Raptors and Indiana Pacers have agreed in principle on a sign-and-trade to send guard Cory Joseph to the Pacers for free agent C.J. Miles, league sources tell ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Miles will sign a three-year, $25 million deal with Toronto, which includes a player option on the final year. The deal is pending official completion of the Toronto-Brooklyn trade that clears DeMarre Carroll off the Raptors’ salary cap.
ESPN In a move to create salary-cap flexibility, the Toronto Raptors have agreed to trade forward DeMarre Carroll to the Brooklyn Nets, league sources told ESPN. For the Nets to take on the two years and $30 million left on Carroll’s contract, the Raptors will attach a 2018 lottery-protected first-round and second-round pick to the deal, league sources said. The Nets will send center Justin Hamilton to Toronto in the trade, sources say. The Raptors will then waive and stretch Hamilton after acquiring him, league sources tell ESPN.
The Toronto Raptors have totally reworked their rotation, first shipping the two years and $30 million of DeMarre Carroll’s contract to the Brooklyn Nets along with their lottery protected 2018 first round pick and their second round pick in exchange for backup center Justin Hamilton who will be waived by the Raptors. After signing their All Star starting backcourt DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry to huge extensions over the past two offseasons, along with re-signing forward Serge Ibaka, the Raptors had to create cap space. The Nets absorb two-years and $30 million of Carroll’s contract, he’s a talented player who has not been the same since suffering a serious knee injury, and pick up two 2018 draft picks for their troubles.
The Raptors also flipped backup point guard Cory Joseph to the Indiana Pacers for swingman C.J. Miles, Joseph was instrumental in keeping the Raptors afloat last season when Kyle Lowry was injured, but they are ready to hand the backup point guard role to Fred VanVleet. In exchange the Raptors get sharpshooter C.J. Miles, who does not do much at this point of his career other than shoot threes, but he’s good at what he does. The most shocking thing about this trade to me was that C.J. Miles is only 30-years-old, you forget he came into the league right out of high school at eighteen-years-old, he is already a twelve year NBA veteran.
