SportsIllustrated The Indiana Pacers have traded star forward Paul George to the Oklahoma City Thunder, as first reported by ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne. The Thunder appear to be a surprise winning bidder in the George sweepstakes. Shelburne reports Victor Oladipo and Domantas Sabonis will go to the Pacers as part of the trade.
In shocking news, Paul George has finally been traded, but it was not to the Houston Rockets or Boston Celtics or Los Angeles Lakers as many expected. Paul George was traded, shockingly, to the Oklahoma City Thunder where he will play second banana to Russell Westbrook. The Thunder send back Victor Oladipo and Domantas Sabonis in the trade, and without a legitimate star, enter rebuilding mode.
It’s a surprising move for the Thunder, because this is essentially a one year rental of Paul George, he is expected to leave as a free agent next summer and return to his hometown of Los Angeles to sign with his favorite team growing up the Lakers.
Celtics fans have to be scratching their heads once again, Danny Ainge could have easily beat the package the Pacers accepted for George, the Celtics are hoarding assets but have not been able to turn those assets into multiple stars the way that the Houston Rockets have been able to build their team.
