SFgate A former Raiders running back was sentenced Wednesday to five years in state prison after pleading no contest to felonies including burglary and identity theft. Michael Antwon Bennett, 38, was sentenced for charges related to a 2015 incident in which he fraudulently took out $225,000 worth of loans in the name of his girlfriend’s parents, according to the Sonoma County district attorney’s office. Bennett, a first-round pick by the Vikings in 2001 who also played for the Chiefs, Bucs and Chargers in his 10-year career, was living on his girlfriend’s parents property in 2015 when he broke into their home and stole documents he then used to steal their identities, the district attorney’s office said in a statement. Bennett used the documents to take out loans against the value of his girlfriend’s parents home in their names, according to prosecutors. At the time, he was already on probation for a Florida wire fraud incident. Bennett pleaded no contest in late March to felonies including burglary, attempted theft from an elder and identity theft. “The defendant used a position of trust within this victim’s family to exploit and take advantage of them,” District Attorney Jill Ravitch said in a statement.
Former NFL star running back Michael Bennett, who was a first round pick out of Wisconsin in the 2001 NFL Draft, will serve five years in prison after being convicted of fraud. Bennett broke into the home of his girlfriend’s parents and stole legal documents, then took out a loan of $225,000 in their names, while he was already on probation due to another fraud conviction in Florida. Michael Bennett rushed for 1,296 yards and 5 touchdowns while adding 351 yards receiving and another touchdown with the Vikings in 2002, he was selected to the Pro Bowl after the best season of his career, but injuries derailed potential superstardom in Minnesota. Bennett ended up playing ten years in the NFL for the Vikings, Chiefs, Buccaneers, Chargers and Raiders, is he was smart with his money, he would not be in this situation.
Note: I used to kill everyone with Michael Bennett in Madden 2002 and 2003, fastest running back in the game.
