USAToday A python hunter captured a massive 16-foot, 10-inch python in the Florida Everglades as part of the South Florida Water Management District’s python elimination program this week, according to local reports. Dusty “The Wildman” Crum, an orchid grower and spare-time python catcher, caught the snake, which didn’t go down without a fight, WFOR-TV in Miami reported. “It is like Andre the Giant versus Hulk Hogan, WrestleMania,” he told the news station. Officials extracted 78 eggs out of the python, which means dozens of pythons will never see the light of day, according to the news station. The South Florida Water Management District pays python hunters an hourly wage, with an extra $50 for pythons that are up to 4 feet and an extra $25 for each foot above 4 feet. Crum’s catch marks the 79th python that has been captured in the water district since the program started in March, according to the water management district. Crum’s python catch earned him $375, WFOR-TV reported.
In Florida, invasive pythons have become a huge problem, as so many reptile owners have released their pet pythons into the wild when they became too large to take care of that the snakes have established a breeding population. There are pythons living in the Florida Everglades now, and despite efforts to eradicate them, experts believe that there will always be a wild population of pythons in Florida. There is just too much swampland to capture and kill all of the pythons, it’s too easy for them to hide and blend in, Florida has gigantic constrictor snakes now and always will. Even worse, pythons are aggressive predators, and are decimating populations of native wildlife such as waterfowl and mammals like raccoons and possums. A python was even filmed attempting to eat a whitetail deer in Florida, and alligators and pythons are preying on each other, as the two apex predators are competing for the same resources. Florida is attempting to control populations of pythons by offering bounties, however there are giants like this seventeen-foot python out there, and it’s only a matter of time until one of these large predatory snakes decides that a human is on the menu.
