As a Knicks fan I am shocked by this breaking news, according to Adrian Wojnarowski (who is never wrong) on Twitter, the New York Knicks have waived guard Brandon Jennings. The Knicks will use the roster spot to sign guard Chasson Randle, who was previously with the team, and who apparently showed the Knicks enough to believe he deserved another look. As a Knicks fan, I enjoyed watching Brandon Jennings on the court as the leader of the second unit, I was actually of the mindset that the Knicks would buy out Derrick Rose and hand the reigns to Brandon Jennings as the starter for the remainder of the season. This move is going to be extremely unpopular with New York Knicks fans, Jennings playground style of play often got The Garden buzzing, he was definitely a fan favorite. I also find it surprising that, at the trade deadline last Thursday, there was not a team that was willing to part with a second round pick for a look at Jennings, who was set to be a free agent this summer. The Knicks own their first round pick in an absolutely loaded 2017 NBA Draft, and releasing Jennings for Randle seems like a move towards tanking, but if the Knicks were going to tank they should have traded their tradable veterans (Rose, Kyle O’Quinn, Courtney Lee) at the deadline for future assets.
UPDATE: This move has been confirmed by BleacherReport.
P.S. Good for Brandon Jennings, hopefully he catches on with a playoff contender and earns himself a long term contract. One team that comes to mind if the New Orleans Pelicans. They just traded most of their guards to the Kings, they could use a backup point guard who does the things Brandon Jennings does well, and you could do a lot worse than throwing lobs to Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousis while chasing the eighth seed in the West.
