ESPN The Washington Wizards have added scoring punch by acquiring small forward Bojan Bogdanovic from the Brooklyn Nets, sources confirmed to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman. The Nets receive a lottery-protected 2017 first-round draft pick, as well as Marcus Thornton and Andrew Nicholson. The Wizards also get Chris McCullough. Bogdanovic, 27, is averaging 14.2 points per game in his third season in the league. He’s making 36 percent of his 3-pointers. The 6-foot-8 Croatian was originally a second-round pick of the Heat in 2011 but signed with the Nets in 2014. Thornton, 29, is averaging 6.6 points for the Wizards. He is a career 11.9 PPG scorer.
The Washington Wizards were desperate to find scoring off their bench at the trade deadline, and after they missed out on their Lou Williams who was traded from the Lakers to the Rockets yesterday, they made a move to acquire sharpshooter Bojan Bogdanovic from the Brooklyn Nets. The Nets also sent Chris McCullough to the Wizards as part of the deal, and received veterans Marcus Thornton and Andrew Nicholson as well as a first round pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. This trade makes sense for the Nets, they need to ship all of their veterans out of town for expiring contacts and draft picks, and getting a first round pick in the loaded 2017 NBA Draft is hugely important. The Nets do not have their own pick, it is owed to the Celtics and may end up being first overall, the lowly Nets need to acquire as many draft picks as possible to turn this pitiful franchise around.
UPDATE: Keep your eyes on the Brooklyn Nets, they are trying to rebuild the franchise and could also trade Brook Lopez, if they can get a first round pick and an additional young player or pick in return.
NOTE: Despite the fact that the Washington Wizards needed a scorer in their second unit, I am not a huge Bojan Bogdanovic fan, and giving up a first round pick in a loaded draft for him seems like a bit much. To me, it feels like the Wizards were upset they missed out on Lou Williams, and jumped at the next bench scorer on the market. I just don’t think Bojan Bogdanovic helps you beat the Cavs come playoff time.
