In a trade that, on paper, seems to make sense for everybody the Kansas City Royals have shipped closer Wade Davis to the defending World Series Champion Chicago Cubs for outfielder Jorge Soler. It was an interesting trade, because in Major League Baseball, you rarely see a one-for-one swap with no prospects involved. The Cubs desperately need a closer, since incumbent Aroldis Chapman is out of their price range, and the 31-year old Davis who becomes a free agent after next season was available. The Cubs have a glut of corner outfielders, and the talented 24-year-old Soler became expendable, he has shown flashes of greatness but struggled through injuries in 2016. The very rare one-for-one swap that seems logical for both teams, of course if Davis struggles and then leaves as a free agent in 2017 or Soler never reaches his potential, this trade may be scrutinized down the line.
