First off, it has to be noted that these pictures which are going viral today are from San Francisco 49ers practice on August 10th, before Colin Kapernick decided that he was not standing for the national anthem of our country because people of color are oppressed in America. When news first broke that Kaepernick was not going to stand for the Star Spangled Banner, I made my thoughts on the issue clear, but some of this bears repeating. If this political stance was coming from Cam Newton or Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson it would mean something, because those quarterbacks are legitimate relevant NFL stars. Colin Kaepernick is not relevant, he lost his starting job to former 2011 NFL Draft bust Blaine Gabbert, he was likely going to be cut by the San Francisco 49ers because he simply cannot play football anymore. Does he have an ulterior motive? I think that this is whole stance by Kaepernick is a last ditch effort to continue to collect an NFL paycheck, because if the 49ers were to cut Kapernick now they would be called racists who cut a man because they do not agree with his beliefs, when in reality they would be cutting an overpriced backup quarterback who can no longer throw the football. Thanks to Kaepernick, who is supposed to be a team leader even as a backup quarterback, the 49ers enter the 2016 NFL season with more off field distractions than any other team in the league. The team will be unable to focus on football this season, as every story and question surrounding the team will now be all about Kaepernick and his beliefs, and the smart move for the future of the franchise would be to cut Kaepernick and focus on football. The employment status of the general manager and head coach ultimately comes down to winning football games, and with the team unable to focus on football due to the controversey Kaepernick has created, he has put the ability of the team’s decision makers to collect paychecks in jeopardy. The media is going to flip out, and the 49ers will have to endure a firestorm, but if the team wants to compete they need to part ways with an overpriced player who is creating a distraction off the field and cannot help the team win on the field. If the 49ers were to cut Kaepernick, I predict that he will not get another NFL job, partly because of the huge distraction that he brings to the locker room but mostly because he is no longer a talented football player who can help a team win games. It will be Colin Kapernick’s lack of talent, not his beliefs that land him in the Canadian Football League, where he can decide if Canada’s national anthem is worth his respect.
