NYDailyNews Former NFL quarterback Erik Kramer shot himself Tuesday night, but survived the apparent suicide attempt according to NBCNews.com. Citing law enforcement sources and Kramer’s ex-wife, Marshawn Kramer, the report says that Kramer was found in a motel with a gunshot wound that was not life-threatening. But Marshawn Kramer says Erik’s sister Kelly told her the injury is more serious than law enforcement sources have said and could be life-threatening. The former Falcons, Lions, Bears and Chargers signal-caller has “suffered from depression since he was with the Bears,” Marshawn Kramer told NBCNews.com. Erik Kramer played for the Bears from 1994-1998. Kramer was an NFL quarterback for 10 seasons. In 1991, Kramer he split time with Rodney Peete and helped the Detroit Lions to a 12-4 record. Kramer went 6-2 in eight starts that year. In his lone full season, 1995, he started all 16 games and led the Bears to a 9-7 record throwing 29 TDs to just 10 INTs. He retired after spending 1999 with the Chargers and suffering a neck injury serious enough that doctors at the time told him if he kept playing, he could face the risk of being paralyzed. The news comes on the heels of Junior Seau’s posthumous induction into the Hall of Fame. Seau committed suicide in May of 2012 and was later shown to have chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, a brain disease that can lead to dementia, memory loss and depression. Marshawn and Erik Kramer were divorced in 2010. In 2011, their oldest son, Griffen, died of a drug overdose. The couple has another son, 17-year-old Dillon. Said Marshawn Kramer to NBCNews.com about her ex-husband: “He’s such a good dad and he would not do this to his son. This is brain injury.”
Sad news today, as former NFL Quarterback Erik Kramer attempted suicide by gunshot in a California hotel room, but is expected to survive. Kramer’s ex-wife Marshawn blames the suicide attempt on NFL and head injuries sustained during his career, but Kramer also lost his oldest son due to a heroin overdose in 2011, which had devastating effects on Kramer as it would any parent. Luckily for Kramer, he survived the suicide attempt and has a new lease on life, and we hope that he and his family find happiness again. We wish Kramer a quick recovery from these injuries, and we hope that he and his family can overcome this, and find happiness.
P.S. His ex-wife is named Marshawn? Only other Marshawn I’ve ever head of was Lynch.
