Huffington Post Good thing this fisherman got a video of his catch (above), because otherwise he’d never have been able to convince folks of the bizarre creature he hauled in while angling off the Singaporean island of Pulau Ubin. “I know that area has a lot of seaweed, so I thought that was what I had hooked up,” 53-year-old Ramlan Saim told Singapore’s English-language newspaper The Straits Times. “But then when I put it on the boat it started to move like an alien.” So what is this freaky thing? According to Discovery News, it’s likely a basket star, an invertebrate related to the starfish. Basket stars start out with five arms, from which smaller appendages sprout over over time. The creatures can re-grow their limbs — which have small sharp hooks on them to capture prey — if someone or something breaks them off.
The ocean is full of strange creatures, but this video which was captured on video by fisherman who accidentally captured it off Singapore, has to be one of the strangest I’ve ever seen. At first I t looks like something from the movie “Alien”, but if you really stop and study the creature, you can see a central body and multiple arms that make it seem to be some sort of mutant starfish. This video proves once again that we know almost nothing about the bottom of the ocean and the creatures that inhabit it, and I guarantee that video of even stranger creatures is still to come, as deep sea exploration becomes easier due to new technology.
