I get it Steve Elkington, it’s a tired joke about gay people that you should have shared with your friends over a round of golf, maybe you would have even gotten a laugh. However, Michael Sam is currently attempting to become the first openly gay athlete in the NFL, and now was definitely not the right time to tweet this joke out to your 59,700 followers on twitter. I’ve got some bad news for you, Elk. We live in a society that loves to be insulted and outraged by any joke, especially on social media, so prepare to be labeled as a homophobe for the rest of your life.
P.S. If you want to save face, Steve Elkington, the only move is to insist that your Twitter was hacked. Claim your twitter was hacked, don’t back down from that assertion, and you have a fighting chance.
NOTE: For those of you who do not know, Steve Elkington is a 51 year old Australian professional golfer, who won the 1995 PGA Championship.
NOTE: This is not the first time that Elkington has gotten into trouble on twitter: Wikipedia In December 2013, Elkington was widely condemned for remarks he made on Twitter following a fatal helicopter crash in Glasgow’s Clutha pub. He wrote: “Helicopter crashes into Scottish pub… Locals report no beer was spilled.” The tweet was quickly deleted but not before being shared by users of the social networking site. The comment provoked a furious backlash from his fellow players and commentators alike.
