Apparently this whole feud started months ago, when Braves starting pitcher Paul Maholm hit Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez with a pitch “on purpose” that he was clearly still upset about based on this quote following the brawl:
“I don’t apologize for this. Just take the pain back. You can see the replay. They hit me for no reason, and I tried to get it back today. It’s the only opportunity that I have. That’s what I did.
Gomez clearly was swinging for the fences, as he swung out of his cleats at his first at bat, almost knocking himself down.
He connected with the next pitch and sent it into the stands, then launched into an epic home run strut, one of the best that this blogger has ever seen. There is pimping a home run, and Theb there is what Gomez did last night, as he took pimping to a whole new level. Gomez watched his home run the whole way out of the park, then barked at Malholm, as he slowly walked to first base and argued with Freddie Freeman. He then slowly made it around the bases without incident, exchanging a few words with Malholm, until he ran into Braves catcher Brian McCann about 20 feet from home plate. That’s when all hell broke loose.
The dugouts cleared, plenty of pushing and shoving followed, and several players were ejected. Brian McCann was even caught throwing a punch which looked like it was out of a barroom brawl scene in “Roadhouse”.
Overall, it was a solid brawl to close out the 2013 MLB regular season, and will get a meaningless late season baseball game some coverage on the national sports stage during football season.
