All reports I have read out of Jets camp have Geno Smith as the favorite to win the starting gig. I am actually shocked at how quickly he seems to have progressed and picked up the system. Reports out of last night’s Green & White scrimmage had Geno as the clear superior player. Sanchez’s numbers from last night will be inflated due to a long TD throw to Hill against the #2’s, but Geno moved the ball consistently and produced well.
Former Jets special teams coach, Mike Westhoff, was in attendance and in his interview was raving about Geno. I have yet to read a report from camp that doesn’t explicitly call out what a better ball Geno throws compared to Sanchez.
Sanchez has experience on Geno and is in better shape. But Geno seems to be heads above Sanchez in pure ability…. and picking up the rest quickly.
I’m pumped to see him against an actual defense next weekend when the Jets play their first preseason game against Detroit. But at this point… a tie in the competition will go to the rookie and it looks like he’ll win the job outright. Mark will have to be lights out to have any shot at keeping his job. In fact, the only way I see Sanchez starting the season is if the Jets decide to put him out there as a lame duck as their early schedule is rough… then bring in Geno when it softens and build confidence for next season.
