The Lions have released running back Jahvid Best, but did him a solid and waited until he was a vested veteran, so he has future healthcare. Best is a sad story, a diminutive back with incredible speed, he had loads of potential. He was an explosive playmaker, who had excellent hands out of the backfield, and was a dangerous return man. He also had major injury concerns coming out of college at California, including multiple concussions, which eventually caught up to him in the NFL. In the old NFL, Best likely would have attempted to play through his concussion issues, and likely would have suffered permanent long term damage if he had done so. Instead, he has not played a down of football since 2011, as he could not get clearance to return to the field. Javid Best may be the first player whose football career ended, but who’s life was ultimately saved, due to the NFL’s new concussion policy. Time will tell.
