ESPN The Golden State Warriors have signed free agent Andre Iguodala to a four-year, $48 million contract, according to Yahoo! Sports. The decision seems to end Golden State’s pursuit of Dwight Howard. Golden State was one of five teams which met with Howard earlier this week in an attempt to lure the free agent center. But with the signing of Iguodala, the team is unlikely to be able to fit Howard in under the salary cap without a number of other moves. The Igoudala signing came after the Warriors traded the expiring contracts of Richard Jefferson, Andris Biedrins and Brandon Rush to the Utah Jazz, according to the San Jose Mercury News. Yahoo! Sports reported multiple draft picks, including Golden State’s 2014 first-rounder, are also included in the deal, which will clear $24 million in cap space. Iguodala averaged 13.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.4 assists in 80 games last season for the Denver Nuggets. Earlier this week, the Sacramento Kings reportedly withdrew a four-year, $56 million offer to the free agent.
I love this addition for the Golden State Warriors, and I think that they have a chance at contending for the NBA Title as presently constructed, even without adding Dwight Howard to the roster as well. Andre Igoudala is a perfect fit, an athletic defensive minded wing to counterbalance an offense first backcourt of Steph Curry and Klay Thompson. David Lee and Andrew Bogut make an excellent front court if both are healthy. They can bring Harrsion Barnes off of the bench as a versatile reserve who can play the 2, 3 or 4 depending on if they are going big, traditional or small. They still have Draymond Green coming off of the bench. This is a very talented roster with a great coach, and as presently constructed, the Golden State Warriors will be the most fun team in the NBA to watch next season.
Now if Dwight Howard wants to join the Warriors, they can offer the Lakers a sign-and-trade headlined by Barnes and Bogut, which could land Howard with Golden State. The addition of Howard may bring this team from an exciting roster to a legitimate NBA Title contender. As usual with Dwight Howard, let’s wait and see what he decides to do. I’ll be looking forward to Warriors basketball next season with or without Dwight.
