First Coast News JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Former Jaguars wide receiver Jimmy Smith is an inmate in a Mississippi jail. Smith entered jail in late March and is serving time a 2-year sentence for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and a 4-year sentence for cocaine possession. His tentative release date is November 8, 2018. After a couple run-ins with the law during and after his playing career, Jimmy moved back to his home state of Mississippi a few years ago. He was running a training facility for athletes when Dan Hicken traveled to Mississippi for this series of stories.
Did everyone know Jimmy Smith was this big of a criminal? As any fan of this site knows, I follow criminal athletes religiously, but I totally missed the boat on this one. There were a few years where Jimmy Smith was an elite NFL wideout, he lead the NFL in receptions in 1999 (116), made six Pro Bowls and was twice an All-Pro. Now he’s in jail until 2018, when he will be 50-years-old for cocaine and firearm possession. Some other little known facts about Smith, he won two Super Bowls as a member of the Dallas Cowboys in the early 90’s as a reserve player before becoming a star with the expansion Jacksonville Jaguars. When Smith retired in 2006, he was seventh All-Time in receptions (862) and 12th All-Time in receiving yards (12,287). He is legitimately a candidate for the Hal-of-Fame, but spending six years in prison on cocaine and firearms charges is not going to sway a lot of voters in his favor. Not a good look in that mugshot, Jimmy, cocaine is a helluva drug.
