WrestleviewWWE is saddened to learn of the passing of William Moody, aka Paul Bearer. Moody made his WWE debut in 1991 as the manager of The Undertaker and went on to become a memorable part of WWE over the course of the next 20 years. Our deepest condolences go out to Moody’s family, friends and fans.
Legendary WWE manager Paul Bearer, real name William Moody, passed away yesterday at the age of 58. He is best known as the long manager, and storyline father of one of the greatest wrestlers of all-time, The Undertaker. Bearer was instrumental in the career of The Undertaker, who rarely spoke during the early part of his career, and used Bearer as his mouthpiece. The Bearer character will be remembered for his cryptic persona, his high pitched “ooooooooh” and his trademark Urn which supposedly gave The Undertaker his power. Bearer was also the manager and storyline father of Kane, who was The Undertaker’s storyline brother, and had a major role in their many feuds.
Interesting fact, in real life William Moody once worked as a funeral director and an embalmer, so maybe the Paul Bearer persona was not as much of an act as previously thought.
The Undertaker returned to the WWE Monday Night Raw this past week, and he will put his undefeated Wrestlemania streak (20-0) on the line against C.M. Punk in early April. We think it would be fitting if Undertaker took out Punk with an urn containing Paul Bearer’s ashes to keep his Wrestlemania streak alive, it was Bearer’s favorite weapon, and he probably would want it that way.
