ESPN The New York Giants signed offensive tackle Will Beatty to a five-year, $38.75 million contract, according to a source familiar with the deal, taking one of the top free-agent offensive linemen off the market. The deal includes $19 million guaranteed. Beatty’s agents, Alan Herman and Jared Fox, declined to confirm the deal and its details when contacted Wednesday. The two sides spent part of the weekend at the combine trying to reach an agreement. Beatty — who turns 28 on Saturday — took his physical and now will spend the prime of his career with the Giants. The left tackle has played in 50 games (31 starts) since being drafted by the Giants in the second round of the 2009 draft. The signing of Beatty also takes care of one of the Giants’ biggest offseason priorities, maintaining their offensive line.
Re-signing Will Beatty was the right move, the only move, and getting him relatively cheap is another win for General Manager Jerry Reese. Although Beatty may never be a All-Pro caliber left tackle, he is a solid one, who really came into his own during the 2012 season. At just 27 years old, Beatty is still in the early portion of his prime, and locking him up for the next five years was the right thing to do.
The Giants simply could not risk Beatty hitting the free agent market, getting into a bidding war and overpaying to keep him, or enter the 2013 season with an uncertainty protecting Eli Manning’s blindside.
The deal will keep Beatty with the New York Giants through the prime of his career, and I actually think the Giants got him at a hometown discount, because he could have gotten more money on the free agent market. He would have been one of the most sought after free agents had he hit the market, and his price could have easily gotten too high for the cash strapped Giants.
Although we here at SportSmasher.com would like to see Beatty develop more of a mean streak on the field and become more aggressive, he seems to have a rather passive personality, we welcome him back to Big Blue. Congratulations, Beatty!
