Adam Shefter is reporting that sources close to the New York Jets are saying that the team will try and restructure high paid WR, Santonio Holmes’ contract. Holmes is scheduled to make $11.25 million ($7.5 million guaranteed) in 2013. He is coming off of a nasty Lisfranc foot injury that caused him to miss 12 games last year. Butt Fumble included, that was the most embarrassing play of the Jets season to me. Holmes got hurt and basically handed the ball to the other team while he fell down in pain. Pretty much sums up his philosophy of team vs himself.
WFAN was reporting that Holmes’ people were not interested in any contract restructure… which doesn’t surprise me at all. The Jets best option here is to try and trade or release Holmes. He has off-set language in his contract… so the Jets will only be responsible for the difference in money if he were to sign elsewhere. I would rather just offer to eat $4M of his contract and trade him for a 4th rounder at best. Then roll into the season with Braylon Edwards, Hill, and Kerely.
I will be shocked if Holmes agrees to any sort of restructure to stay with the Jets.
