ESPN’s Adam Shefter is reporting that the Atlanta Falcons will likely release starting RB, Miachel Turner. Turner is scheduled to make $6.9M next season.
This move isn’t surprising at all. Turner was worn down drastically over the past couple of seasons and Jacquizz Rodgers has emerged as a quality runner for the Falcons offense. The Falcons have also focused their offensive game plan around the passing attack, led by Matt Ryan, Roddy White, and Julio Jones. Rodgers is speedy and a real threat to catch the fall out of the backfield.
Two story lines will emerge here.
1. Where does Turner end up next season and what type of contract will he command. I personally think he is done as a starter in this league, but could end up a goal line/bruiser back in a system that features a speedy attack as their primary running game. He will get backup RB money at best. Tuner has to be very afraid of becoming Brandon Jacobs.
2. Jacquizz Rodgers is instantly fantasy relevant! He could end up a low end #1 RB on my board come late summer (assuming the Falcons don’t bring in competition in FA or the draft). I’ve always liked Rodgers and could see him taking on a Darren Sproles type role in this offense. I’ll be targeting him for sure in fantasy drafts.
