Breaking News: There had been a change of plans, Oregon head coach Chip Kelly will be the new head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. This is is a MAJOR surprise to everyone, because Kelly flirted with NFL teams over the past few weeks but had ultimately decided to return to Oregon. Again, this is breaking news, keep it here for updates.
ESPN Oregon coach Chip Kelly will be the new coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, league sources told ESPN.Kelly re-emerged as a candidate recently and an agreement was just reached Wednesday. The Eagles had interviewed Kelly early in its search for a replacement for longtime coach Andy Reid, talking to the coach in Arizona after the Ducks’ 35-17 Fiesta Bowl victory over Kansas State. But sources had told ESPN after the meeting that Kelly had decided to stay at Oregon. The school never made an official announcement regarding Kelly’s employment with the team, however. Kelly is 46-7 in four years as head coach at Oregon. The Ducks have been to four straight BCS bowl games — including a bid for the national championship against Auburn two seasons ago — and have won three Pac-12 championships.
Obviously Nick Foles, a pocket passer, is not an ideal fit for the Oregon spread offense. The Eagles do have a lot of playmakers on offense who could succeed in Chip Kelly’s spread attack including LeSean McCoy, DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin.
There are some who now think that the Eagles would be an ideal landing spot for West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith, who has a skill set that translates well to the spread offense, in April’s NFL Draft.
There are also some who think the Eagles should rework Michael Vick’s contract as to avoid paying him a monster roster bonus, and bring him back to run Chip Kelly’s spread offense.
One thing is certain, whoever is quarterbacking the Eagles needs a revamped offensive line, an awful unit that’s poor play caused injuries to both Vick and Foles in 2012.
