On Saturday January 12th, the final Stikeforce event takes place, and then the organization is folded and merges with the UFC. It is an incredible card packed with action coming to us live from the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City Oklahoma, and they have put together a star-studded card for their final event. You can catch the action on Showtime, and I need a lot of wins, after suffering my worst MMA picking weekend ever at UFC 155. Let’s get to the picks:
Preliminaries: Estevan Payan OVER Michael Bravo, Jorge Gurgel OVER Adriano Martins, Ryan Couture OVER K.J. Noons, Tim Kennedy OVER Trevor Smith, Roger Gracie OVER Anthony Smith, Pat Healy OVER Kurt Holobaugh
(These picks are not as in-depth as usual, because we’ve got playoff football coming up shortly, but I wanted to make sure I got my picks on record.)
Ed Herman (20-8-1) vs. Ronaldo Souza (16-3-1) – Catchweight (194lbs) Bout – We all remember Ed Herman from his UFC days, however he is taking on Ronaldo Souza, a man that once submitted Marcelo Garcia. I think that Herman will be tapping out rather quickly against Souza. THE PICK: Souza by submission in round 1.
Gegard Mousasi (32-3-2) vs. Mike Kyle (19-8-3) – Light Heavyweight Bout –Mike Kyle is a big man who hits hard and holds a win over Wes Sims, however Mousasi is a former Strikeforce lightweight champion who has only lost once in his last 18 fights (to King Mo.) This should be an exciting bout, and I think it goes the distance, but I expect Mousasi to dominate. THE PICK: Mousasi by decision.
Josh Barnett (31-6) vs. Nandor Guelmino (11-3) – Heavyweight Bout – Josh Barnett is one of the top heavyweights in the sport and a fighter that I greatly respect, he had won eight straight matches until losing to Daniel Cormier last May, and I am a big fan. I have never seen Nandor Guelmino fight, but I know the man nicknamed “The Hun” is a ripped physical specimen, who has likely bitten off more than he can chew against Barnett. THE PICK: Barnett by submission (ARMBAR) Round 2.
Daniel Cormier (10-0) vs. Dion Staring (28-7) Heavyweight Bout – This match was supposed to feature Daniel Cormier against former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir, however, Mir had to pull out due to injury and Staring was brought in as a replacement. Daniel Cormier is one of the most dangerous men on the planet right now, he is undefeated in his MMA career, and the former Oklahoma State wrestler should continue his dominance on Saturday night. I have seen Dion Staring fight before, and he is a tough guy, but he has his work cut out for him if he is going to be the guy that hands Cormier his first career loss on Saturday night. THE PICK: Cormier by TKO in round 1.
Nate Marquardt (32-10-2) vs. Tarec Saffiedine (13-3) – Welterweight Championship Bout – This should be an excellent main event as Nate Marquardt puts his title on the line against rising challenger Tarec Saffidine, as the final bout in Strikeforce history. I have watched Nate Marquardt fight in the UFC many times, and although he has some tough losses in his career and is facing a hot fighter, I am picking him to retain the Welterweight Championship. THE PICK: Marquardt by TKO in the third round.
