During a recent interview with Jay Glazer, UFC Hall of Famer “The Natural” Randy Couture was asked if he would ever consider coming out of retirement, and he joked that he would, to fight Steven Seagal.
Seagal got word of Couture’s remark and took, what he perceived to be a challenge, very seriously saying:
“I have to wonder what his intentions may have been in saying that. I always thought that Randy was my friend and a gentleman. I’m kind of confused why he would say that, but I’m here, anybody can find me any time and any place. If Randy really wants to fight me, he can fight me any time he wants” “It would be for free, and it would be some place where there are no witnesses. I’m hoping it wouldn’t get to that, and I don’t know why it would come about, but if that’s what he wants, he can get it any time he wants.” “I don’t play by the rules. I’m sure one person will walk out. I’m a man of honor. I’m a gentleman, but I am a warrior, and if he needs to find me, he knows where to find me.”
Randy Couture countered:
“I’m the one that started the joke as an off-handed comment I made to Jay Glazer – that I’d only come out of retirement if it were to fight Seagal. Obviously now somebody has talked to him about it and it has gotten some legs. I’m not surprised that he wants to do it in private, remote location where nobody could see it happen. Obviously I intended it as a joke. I don’t think it would really happen.”
There is a chance that this bad blood stems from Couture’s last fight, when he was knocked out by a Lyoto Machida front kick at UFC 129. After the fight, Seagal told reporters that he taught Machida the front kick which knocked out Couture in his final match.
If it were ever to happen, the Seagal vs Couture matchup would be the highest Pay-Per-View buy rate in UFC history, there is a reason that Seagal wants it to take place behind closed doors. Couture is 11 years younger than Seagal and still in incredible shape, I’ve got Couture by a TKO eight seconds into round one, and yes I’d pay no matter what it cost to see the fight.
Steven Seagal’s only chance in a fight against Randy Couture would be if he got a free shot with a sock full of pool balls like in his classic film Out For Justice.
