I guess it’s a Detroit Lions thing. I hope it’s just a Detroit Lions thing.
When Detroit Lions wide receiver Titus Young had a a son earlier this season, he had “SR” added to the back of his jersey, to signify that he is now a father and the “Senior” Titus Young. I ripped the fact that he changed his name on this website and said it was a “Diva Move” which I took a lot of shit for from Lions fans, defending their precious wide out. (Coincidentally, Titus Young was suspended for the Thanksgiving loss to the Houston Texans due to “conduct detrimental to the team” so you’re right Lions fans, he’s not a diva or a problem.)
When Young’s teammate, running back Mikel Leshoure had a son (congrats) earlier this week, he decided to follow his teammate’s lead and have “SR” added to his jersey as well. Is everyone on the Lions going to do this when they sire children now? Is everyone in professional sports? Is the new thing going to be to name your son after yourself just so you can add SENIOR to your name and and “SR” to the back of his jersey?
For example, Ben Roethlisberger had a son today (true story, congrats Ben) who he named Ben, so when he returns from injury he should demand that his jersey reads “ROETHLISBERGER SR”. Will the guy that stitches player’s names on the back of his jersey kill himself? Will two more letters fit?
Where does it end? Will children be upset if their proud primadonna fathers are not acknowledging them on the back of their jerseys?
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has multiple kids, should he add the senior to the back of his jersey so we are all able to differentiate that Tom Brady and not his four year old son is quarterbacking the New England Patriots?
Are we in danger of the following comment happening:
“There is an infant quarterbacking the Patriots tonight? Call child protective services! That is cruel and the child could get hurt! Oh sorry, I didn’t realize that was Tom Brady Senior, I thought it was junior. They should really add the “SR” to the back of the jersey, this is so confusing.”
I say that we put a stop to the horrible practice of new fathers adding “SR” to the back of their jersey to signify that they are a proud poppa immediately, before every athlete in every sport has a senior added to their jersey.
“Lebron James Senior with the rebound, he brings the ball up court, he’s guarded by Carmelo Anthony Senior. James Senior passes it to Dwayne Wade Senior, who is doubled by Jason Kidd Senior and Tyson Chandler Senior, and he finds the wide open Ray Allen Senior for a three pointer! It’s good! Great ball movement by the Miami Heat leads to a three pointer by Ray Allen Senior, assisted by Dwayne Wade Senior, and the Heat have the lead.”
Nobody wants that. Let’s put and end to this awful idea. It should have been stopped yesterday.
