ESPN.Com San Francisco Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera has been suspended for 50 games, effective immediately, after testing positive for elevated levels of testosterone.
Cabrera, who was the MLB All-Star Game MVP was batting .346 with 11 home runs and 60 RBIs, said “My positive test was the result of my use of a substance I should not have used.”
I have always rooted for Melky Cabrera, being that he is a former Yankee (’05-’09), but I had a feeling his insane jump in production this season was too good to be true.
I thought maybe getting Cabrera in a stable situation, away from the media and his buddy Robinson Cano, had awoke a sleeping giant and Cabrera was legitimately having a breakout season.
I was wrong, and now the All-Star game and home field advantage for the National League in the World Series are both tainted. Another asterisk in the Major League Baseball history books.
Melky needs to get Milwaukee Brewers outfielder and reigning NL MVP Ryan Braun’s lawyer’s phone number. Maybe he can inexplicably get Cabrera back on the field in a week, like he did Braun, following a similar failed drug test. Maybe this is where Braun slipped Melky the needle:
