This morning we learned that several NFL stars including two who are no strangers to off field issues were recently arrested, and if they are disciplined by the NFL it could have an impact on their team’s seasons (and their fantasy football draft stock). With all NFL teams reporting to training camp shortly, you can be sure that these players will be flying to New York in the coming days to meet with Sheriff I mean NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Here is a breakdown:
1) Marshawn Lynch, Running Back – Seattle Seahawks – Arrested for Driving Under the Influence in his hometown of Oakland, California early on Saturday July 14th, while he was in town for a charity event. This is not Lynch’s first run in with the law involving a motor vehicle, in 2008 Lynch was arrested after he admitted to striking a female pedestrian with his car while leaving an upstate New York bar (he was playing for the Bills at the time) then leaving the scene of the accident. He was also arrested in Los Angeles in March 2009 after being found in possession of an illegal semiautomatic handgun. Prediction: 4 Game Suspension. This will certainly impact Lynch’s value in upcoming Fantasy Football drafts.
2) Dez Bryant, Wide Receiver – Dallas Cowboys – Arrested on Monday for an incident on Saturday night, during an argument with his half brother, he shoved his mother. Bryant is charged with assaulting a female family member, a Class A misdemeanor. Although this is his first arrest, Bryant was also detained by police after an altercation at a Miami nightclub in January and was once banned from a Dallas area mall for inappropriate attired and foul language. Prediction: No Suspension, since its his first actual arrest, but squarely in Sheriff Goodell’s crosshairs for the future.
UPDATE: In a more elaborate report of the incident, it was revealed that Bryant grabbed his mother by the shirt so hard that it ripped her bra and he hit her multiple times in the head and face with a baseball cap. Very classy, Dez, way to represent “America’s Team”.
3) Elvis Dumervil, Defensive End – Denver Broncos – Arrested in his native Miami on Saturday when, during a traffic argument, Dumervil and another man exited their vehicles to approach a third car. Each man lifted their shirts to reveal guns concealed in their waistbands. The passengers in the third vehicle and another witness promptly called police, and Dumervil and his friend were each arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Prediction: 2 Game Suspension. Although its his first run in with the law, its a very serious charge, and Dumervil needs to be disciplined. The guy won the Ed Block Courage Award in 2009, he needs to set a better example than this.
It’s hard to believe that three players of this caliber were dumb enough to get arrested on these serious charges this close to the start of NFL training camp. Roger Goodell certainly has his hands full and it will be interesting to see the discipline that he hands down in each case.
