Brutal news coming out of Baltimore this morning. Reports are circulating that outside linebacker Terrell Suggs has tore an Achilles tendon and will miss the entire 2012 season.
Suggs, who went to Arizona State, was working out in Arizona when the injury occurred.
One of the most explosive pass rushers in the NFL, Suggs is the reigning AP Defensive Player of the Year. He had 70 tackles, 14 sacks, 7 forces fumbles and 2 interceptions during the 2011 season.
Do not be surprised if the Ravens call the Indianapolis Colts and attempt to trade for veterans pass rushers Dwight Freeney or Robert Mathis. It’s easy to connect the dots between the Colts and the Ravens, former Ravens defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano is the new Colts head coach. The Colts just began a rebuilding project by jettisoning 3 Time NFL MVP quarterback Peyton Manning and drafting Stanford signal caller Andrew Luck with the first overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft. Rumors have circulated that neither Freeney or Mathis want anything to do with the rebuilding effort and could be candidates to be traded.
The Ravens have also shown interest in Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora in the past. With Umenyiora demanding a new contract in New York and feuding with Giants’ General Manager Jerry Reese, the Ravens could make on offer for the sack artist.
The Ravens drafted Alabama pass rusher Courtney Upshaw in the second round of the draft, he was brought in to compliment Suggs and upgrade the pressure opposite Suggs. Now he will be asked to fill his shoes.
