In other news… the sky is blue.
We all saw this coming. In fact, we wrote about likely destinations for Peyton a few weeks back. So when ESPN’s Chris Mortensen (or as I like to call him, MortReport… which is a great Twitter handle) reported earlier today that the Colts will announce the release of the all time great QB during a Wednesday press conference, nobody was surprised. Also as expected, Peyton and Irsay will both be in attendance and there will be no bad blood between the two parties. This is disappointing as I would have loved to see Peyton doing situps in his front yard in front of a media circus ala T.O.
Since drafting Peyton #1 overall in 1998, Colts fans have enjoyed football relevancy and a Super Bowl win. But now the fun starts… the most coveted free agent of the offseason will be on the market and set to land somewhere new. The destination will also play a big role in this year’s NFL draft… particularly among suitors for the #2 overall pick and RGIII.
I can’t help but have flashbacks to the last time the Colts possessed the #1 overall pick in 1998. They selected Peyton and the highly touted Ryan Leaf went #2. The rest is NFL Draft Bust legacy. Will 2012 have a similar story line (Im looking at you RGIII)? Will Andrew Luck decide to suck and stick a dose of QB karma to Indy? Or will both QBs go on to be stars?
In the meantime, we can watch teams begin bidding for the all time great QB. Some teams will deny interest (Im looking at you Rex Ryan). While others will whore themselves out (cough. Dan Synder. cough.). The most discussed landing place may result in Peyton taking his talents to south beach. Only time will tell…
