The San Antonio Spurs are retiring jersey number twelve in honor of three time NBA champion small forward Bruce Bowen, whose career averages are 6.1 points per game, 2.8 rebounds per game and 1.2 assists per game. I know Bowen is a pillar in the community and was known for his defense (Five Times All-Defense first team, Three Times All-Defense Second Team), but retiring his number is ridiculous. Shouldn’t there be a requirement that you need to make an All-Star Team once to even consider having your number retired? Shouldn’t your claim to fame not be getting accused of intentionally trying to injure other players by sticking your feet under them as they land after shooting jumpshots? I demand requirements for retired jersey numbers! This honor is tainted! Might as well retire Vinny Del Negro’s number while we’re here, in fact he has better career numbers! Tim Duncan gets his jersey retired. David Robinson gets his jersey retired. Bruce Bowen should barely have a jersey to begin with.
